They start out pretty simple, tricycle or big wheel, Superman or The Rock. Over time, these decisions grow with importance, buy or rent, stock options or IRA's? Somewhere between these childhood and adulthood choices comes your collegiate career.College began with a choice. You chose to push yourself to achieve higher goals and strengthen your knowledge of the world. You prepared for this experience with over 12 years of education and growth as a person. But for all the preparation in your arrival, no one could have ever explained the millions of choices that await you on campus. One of the most important choices you will face is whether or not to join a fraternity. While college focuses on academic achievement, the people you meet, and socialize with are the ones who help develop you as a person and strengthen your spirit. Fraternal life is an opportunity to find peers that challenge you to be your best while sharing with you a lifetime of brotherhood. Pi Alpha Phi is a place where members develop character and live by a set of time honored traditions. Since 1929, Pi Alpha Phi has long stood for excellence. Setting itself apart from other fraternities, the foundation of Pi Alpha Phi is based upon the strength of its five pillars: Brotherhood, Academic Excellence, Leadership, Asian-Awareness, and Philanthropy. For further details of our commitment to these five pillars, please read our Mission Statement. Each chapter of the fraternity strives to develop these ideals within every member. Choosing Pi Alpha Phi is an investment in your future. Through opportunities such as the Leadership conventions and Brotherhood Retreats, Pi Alpha Phi makes men into campus leaders and community partners. We want members who can work together as a team and yet stand alone as strong individuals. Choosing Pi Alpha Phi will change your life and open your eyes to a world of big possibilities! Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: There are so many fraternities. What makes Pi Alpha Phi special?A: Pi Alpha Phi's history, traditions, strong brotherhood, and members themselves make us the dynamic, progressive organization we are today. Membership in Pi Alpha Phi provides the opportunity for academic assistance, leadership and organizational development, planned and informal social activities, athletic endeavors, philanthropy events, and living. All of these experiences result in lifelong friendships which make your college years some of the most exciting and memorable in your life. As convincing as these words may be, they cannot truly convey the essence of Pi Alpha Phi. Drop by a rush event and see for yourself what makes Pi Alpha Phi special. Q: Would joining Pi Alpha Phi affect my grades? A: Pi Alpha Phi is concerned about your education. Every member's first obligation is to the university and then to extra-curricular activities. Pi Alpha Phi assists by offering scholarship programs which may include study partners, mentors, study hours, and time management workshops. You can access the network of fraternity members who already know how to use campus resources such as the library, study centers, computer labs, and academic advisors. Q: Doesn't it cost a lot of money to join a fraternity? A: The cost of joining a fraternity is similar to joining any other organization. There is a one-time membership/initiation fee. After that, the only fees that are assessed are dues that the chapter collects to cover expenses for social events and fraternity functions. These dues will vary greatly depending on housing and meal plans, but they are competitive with the normal cost of living on campus or in an apartment off campus. In fact, you may find that because you're pooling your money with all of your brothers, your overall costs may actually go down. Q: Does being in the fraternity take a lot of time? A: Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires an investment of one's time. Research has shown that involved college students are more likely to graduate. Also, they report greater satisfaction with their college experience. Time management is an essential facet of collegiate life. Through fraternity involvement, Pi Alpha Phi members learn how to balance their academic work, campus involvement, and social commitments. Q: I'm a little unsure about the whole "fraternity thing". If I come out to Rush, does that mean I have to join? A: Absolutely not. It is totally understandable to be a little unsure about whether to join a fraternity. However, we strongly encourage you to come out to a Rush event. This gives you the opportunity to meet the brothers and determine if Pi Alpha Phi is a good fit for you. |
